Movie fans the world over have been spoiled over the last ten years as Marvel Studios has not only built a shared universe featuring some of its most popular characters, but also inspired other studios to attempt to do the same.

Crossovers in Hollywood movies are nothing new, though. Years before Robert Downey Jr graced the screen as Tony Stark in Iron Man, the xenomorphs from Alien squared off against the Predator in Alien vs. Predator, Freddy Krueger went glove-to-machete with Jason Voorhees in Freddy vs. Jason, and let’s not forgot the Universal monster movies from the 30’s and 40’s that saw the likes of Frankenstein, the wolf man, and the mummy interact on screen.

With the rise of the internet and new memes being generated daily, crossovers in this new medium are more common than ever.

We’ve seen nonsensical Deadpool memes and memes showcasing why the Avengers stood no chance against Thanos, but with Infinity War dominating the box office and Deadpool 2 about to hit theaters it only makes sense to pit the Merc with a mouth against Earth’s Mightiest heroes on the meme battlefield.

It may be years before we see an X-Force/Avengers crossover on the big screen so in the meantime here are the 20 Hilarious Deadpool Vs Avengers Memes Every Marvel Fan Needs To See.

Warning: there are spoilers for the Marvel Cinematic Universe, including Avengers: Infinity War, in the entries that follow.

20. stan lee cameo

Nothing in this world is certain but passing away and taxes… and Stan Lee cameos in Marvel movies.

The comic book legend (and creator of iconic heroes like Spider-Man, Hulk, the X-Men, Iron Man, and many others) has appeared in every Marvel Cinematic Universe movie so far.

His roles range from funny (like the time he called Iron Man “Tony Stank” in Civil War), to uninspired (like his bus driver gig in Infinity War), to downright thought-provoking (like the revelation in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 that he is working with the Watchers, which is precisely why he has been popping up in every movie).

These cameos began long before the MCU, though.

He appeared in both Fantastic Four and Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer (but wasn’t in Fant4stic—thank goodness), all three entries in Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man Trilogy, and even made an appearance in Deadpool.

There is real hope among fans that Lee’s next appearance in Deadpool 2 will shatter the fourth wall in a way that only a movie about the Merc with a Mouth can.

Considering Deadpool’s unique ability to acknowledge that he is in a movie, it stands to reason that he should recognize Lee when he pops up on screen. Some witty banter would be welcome in the blockbuster sequel.

19. trolling peter

Considering how many actors have played Spider-Man over the years, you can usually guess a person’s age by which actor they most identify with the character.

Younger Marvel fans will say Tom Holland is the true Peter Parker. Meanwhile, slightly older moviegoers will claim Andrew Garfield is the best of the bunch. Tobey Maguire, however, will always have a place in the hearts of those who grew up on Sam Raimi’s original trilogy from the early 2000’s.

One of the biggest differences between Holland’s Peter Parker and the two that came before him is the MCU’s take on the character has thus far neglected to mention Uncle Ben, whereas the older movies both featured the character’s demise on screen.

This makes Holland’s Parker much less susceptible to the trolling of the Merc with a Mouth.

Unfortunately, the same cannot be said of Maguire, as clearly demonstrated by this meme of Deadpool telling him a simple “Knock Knock” joke.

The joke is hilarious on its own (since we all know Uncle Ben can’t be knocking at the door, for obvious reasons), but the images put it over the top. Deadpool’s expression during the punchline is simply cruel considering the subject matter, and Tobey’s tears are the icing on the cake.

18. deadpool and black widow

This one could get awkward in a hurry. Ryan Reynolds was originally cast as Wade Wilson in 2009’s X-Men Origins: Wolverine.

The lackluster movie disappointed audiences across the globe by completely changing everything about Deadpool, even going so far as to sew the Merc with a mouth’s mouth shut.

Shortly thereafter, Reynolds embarked on a nine-year journey to bring the character back to the big screen.

Scarlett Johansson, meanwhile, was cast as Black Widow back in 2010’s Iron Man 2 and has been an MCU stalwart ever since.

Throw in the fact that Reynolds and Johansson were briefly married from 2008 to 2011 (before the former married current-wife Blake Lively), plus their characters’ history in the comics, and you’ve got the making for a potentially awkward moment between the two at some point in the future.

Deadpool crossing over into the MCU was a distant pipedream just a year ago. Once Disney acquired 20th Century Fox, however, it can become a reality.

If Marvel Studios decides to bring Deadpool into the MCU and have him cross paths with Black Widow, then we could be in for one heck of a situation in which art imitates life, just as this meme suggests.

17. cap versus deadpool

Establishing a shared cinematic universe in which different characters are introduced in solo movies and then subsequently brought together in an epic crossover is tough (just ask Warner Bros. and Universal whose attempts at shared-universe-building have been laughable at best).

However, keeping those characters interesting over the course of many different movies is even tougher.

Tony Stark, for example, has appeared in nine MCU movies to date (including his cameo in The Incredible Hulk).

In order to keep the character compelling over the last ten years, Marvel Studios had him constantly evolve. He went from a cocky playboy, to a caring team leader, to a father-figure for Peter Parker.

Captain America has seen a similar character arc, evolving from a rule-following boy scout to a vigilante on the run.

What hasn’t changed, however, is his aversion to crude language, as hilariously portrayed in this meme of Colossus telling Cap that Deadpool has been cursing at the X-Mansion and Cap immediately making his way there by motorcycle.

The idea of Captain America telling Colossus that he can’t go to Professor X’s mansion due to the fact that he is in a completely different universe and then immediately changing his mind and traversing said universes in an attempt to stop Deadpool from swearing is simply hysterical.

16. the battle of new york

Back in 2012, Joss Whedon was given the unenviable task of delivering on Marvel Studios’ promise to bring Earth’s Mightiest Heroes together in an unprecedented crossover movie event.

Not only did he deliver, but he knocked it out of the park.

In The Avengers, the writer-director created a thoroughly satisfying movie with an incredible climax in the form of the battle of New York. Each Avenger was given their moment to shine in a near-twenty minute action extravaganza that still holds up today.

However, what would have happened if Deadpool had somehow been involved in the melee? How would he have fit in alongside the likes of Iron Man, Thor, Hulk, Captain America, Hawkeye, and Black Widow?

Well, the creator of this meme showed us just that by cutting together an image from the opening scene of Deadpool (where the Merc is sitting on a highway, drawing and listening to his Walkman) alongside a shot of one of the Leviathans from the epic battle.

True to form, Deadpool notices the alien ship before dismissing it entirely and commenting, “Not my movie, not my problem.”

He promptly goes back to drawing… and that just about sums up his role in the battle. We’d expect nothing less from the crazed mercenary.

15. deadpool versus loki

Speaking of The Avengers and the battle of New York, one of the MCU’s many, many expertly-written-and-delivered lines comes just before said battle kicks off.

After Iron Man returns to Stark Tower and finds Loki there waiting for him, he decides to have a drink and then threaten the God of Mischief.

Tony does a headcount and describes the Avengers as “your brother, the demigod, a super soldier, living legend who lives up to the legend, a man with breathtaking anger-management issues, [and] a couple of master assassins.”

Loki then reminds Tony that he has an army to which Tony brilliantly quips, “We have a Hulk.” The line is so cool that Loki himself says it to Thanos in the opening scene of Infinity War.

Not to be outdone, but Deadpool also has an obscenely strong, near-indestructible ally in the form of Colossus.

Sure, the two exchanged blows at the movie’s beginning (and by that we mean Deadpool broke a few limbs trying to harm the Russian brute), but fought together by the film’s end.

If Loki were to try and call on his army against Deadpool and co., then you can be darn sure tht Mr. Pool would quip, much like Tony, that he has a Colossus.

14. deadpool and iron man

Avengers: Age of Ultron wasn’t as well-received as its predecessor, but had its fair share of cool and funny moments nonetheless.

The opening scene of Earth’s mightiest heroes working together to infiltrate Hydra’s compound, the party scene that saw the heroes cutting loose and trying to lift Thor’s hammer, Vision succeeding in lifting said hammer, and the final fight to defend the drill from Ultron’s drones all stand out among the film’s highlights.

Another highlight comes when Tony curses during the aforementioned opening battle and is admonished by Captain America. Tony later asks, “no one else is gonna deal with the fact that Cap just said ’language’?”

There is a similar scene in Deadpool just before the climactic battle between the titular antihero and Francis.

With Colossus about to engage in a fight with Angel Dust, Deadpool shouts some R-rated encouragement to his ally. Colossus reprimands the Merc with a Mouth for his language before Deadpool responds with something that is for mature audiences only.

As the meme suggests, if Colossus, Cap, Deadpool, and Iron Man ever cross paths, there’s a good chance the former two will bond over their aversion to colorful language, while the latter two will become best friends due to their desire to curse out their cohorts.

13. deadpool meets rocket

Some memes just write themselves. As is the case with this gem, which shows what might just go down should Guardians of the Galaxy’s Rocket Raccoon and Deadpool ever cross paths.

During the Kyln prison escape scene in Guardians of the Galaxy, Rocket gives each of his fellow guardians a task.

Gamora volunteers to steal an armband from a guard, Groot reaches for an essential battery that sits high up on a wall, and Peter Quill is tasked with obtaining a fellow prisoner’s prosthetic leg, which he acquires in a trade for 30,000 units.

The gag comes when Rocket reveals that he has no use for the leg at all and only asked Quill to get it as a joke. The joke is called back in Guardians 2 when Rocket asks Groot for a ravager’s eye.

This is another MCU joke that fits in perfectly with Deadpool’s style of humor.

Early on in the movie, Deadpool finds himself handcuffed to Colossus. Seeing no other means of escape in sight, Deadpool cuts his hand off and throws himself off a highway and into the back of a truck.

The hand then slowly grows back, hence this beautiful meme of Rocket asking for a hand and Deadpool happily obliging.

12. deadpool is worthy

Thor: Ragnarok is currently the eleventh highest-grossing MCU movie to hit theaters so far, raking in $854 million worldwide, which places it just above Guardians of the Galaxy and just below Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2.

The hype for the movie grew tenfold when the first trailer dropped and showed Hela (the Goddess of Death) destroying Thor’s beloved hammer Mjolnir with one hand.

Fans were shocked to see the hammer (which was forged in the heart of a dying star and considered one of the most powerful weapons in the universe) smashed to bits with such little effort; especially considering its storied history in the franchise.

Blessed by Odin, Mjolnir could only be lifted by the worthy; an edict that was challenged by the Avengers in Age of Ultron. Iron Man, War Machine, Hawkeye, and Hulk each tried and failed to life the hammer.

Captain America, meanwhile, managed to move it slightly (much to Thor’s disbelief).

Just before the movie’s climax, the newly-born Vision manages to life the weapon, proving that he too is worthy of the honor.

Naturally, Deadpool fans across the world may wonder whether or not he too is worthy enough to wield the mighty hammer. As this meme suggests, he just might be.

11. deadpool starts the war

Marvel fans across the globe were ecstatic when they first learned the subtitle for Captain America 3. The movie was originally announced as Serpeant Society before Marvel President Kevin Feige pivoted and revealed the actual title would be Civil War.

Fans rejoiced at the idea that instead of seeing another Captain America solo movie, as they would get what would essentially be an Avengers 2.5 that would pit the heroes against each other in a knock-down-drag-out battle for the ages.

Directors Anthony and Joe Russo delivered on the hype, effortlessly balancing the large cast while simultaneously creating an epic action set piece featuring all the heroes and a heartfelt conflict between Iron Man, Captain America, and the Winter Soldier.

The movie also gifted us one of the best meme templates to come out of the MCU to date: the Civil War meme.

The meme is as simple as they come. Captain America and Iron Man have a seemingly innocent disagreement that ultimately leads to the movie’s titular war.

Some of the best (and most ridiculous) causes of the war include: disagreements over the pronunciation of “gif,” an argument over who ate the last pizza roll, and whether or not Black Widow deserves her own solo movie.

This meme of the two heroes arguing over how to solve a logic puzzle and Deadpool chiming in with a solution of his own is a nice twist on an old meme.

10. superhero landing

Critics of the Marvel Cinematic Universe are quick to say it has become formulaic.

They’ll say that Doctor Strange is a rehash of Iron Man that sees the titular hero start out as brilliant and cocky before a tragedy befalls them and causes them to see the error of their ways, or that Age of Ultron is too similar to The Avengers in that both movies end with the Avengers fighting one main villain and an army of nameless henchmen.

While it’s true that the MCU has copied itself a few times, the fact of the matter is that all superhero movies have cliched moments.

Whether that moment be the hero walking away from an explosion without looking back, the hero tragically losing a loved one early on in their life and vowing to fight for good as a result, or the movie’s main villain having a close, personal connection with the hero.

Then, of course, there is the superhero landing. You know the drill. The hero leaps (or falls) from high and lands on bended knee with ease.

Superman and Iron Man have done this coutless times in their movies, and Deadpool even mocked the practice when Angel Dust did it in his movie. Had he been in Civil War when Spider-Man did it, it probably would have brought about a similar reaction.

9. civil war commentary

Deadpool’s defining characteristic (and the one that allows him to stand out at a time when it feels like no less than a dozen superhero movies are released each year) also happens to be one of his funniest, and that is the ability to break the fourth wall and mock his own comics and movie.

He does this again and again in the 2016 movie.

He talks directly to the camera, calls out Angel Dust’s aforementioned superhero landing (hilariously pointing out that it’s bad for the knees), and even credits Hugh Jackman for getting the Deadpool movie greenlit.

One of the funnier examples of this comes when he visits the X-Mansion and only meets Colossus and Negasonic Teenage Warhead, despite the mansion supposedly being home to many other mutants.

Deadpool promptly points this out by saying, “It’s a big house. It’s funny that I only ever see two of you. It’s almost like the studio couldn’t afford another X-Man.”

This line is absolutely applicable to the MCU’s Civil War, which was based on a comic that saw dozens and dozens of heroes go toe-to-toe.

On screen, however, Marvel Studios had to limit the war down to just two teams of six. It was still an epic fight, but the meme makes a good point nonetheless.

8. deadpool squeals on loki

Sometimes the simplest solution is the best, as perfectly shown in this comic by Dorkly.

Marvel fans will remember that Thor: The Dark World ended with Loki disguised as Odin ruling over Asgard and the rest of the nine realms.

Odin’s fate in all of this wouldn’t be revealed until Thor: Ragnarok when Thor returns to Asgard after slaying Surtur and finds the Allfather behaving oddly.

Thor explains that he searched the nine realms for answers to his visions of Ragnarok and found the realms in chaos while Odin was on Asgard “sitting in [his] bathrobe, eating grapes.”

The God of Thunder manages to get Loki to reveal himself by tossing Mjolnir into the distance and having it return to his hand, all the while holding Loki’s head between the two.

Things could have gone much differently if Deadpool had been involved.

The idea of the Merc with a Mouth exposing the God of Mischief’s ruse through some simple wordplay is ridiculous but also hilarious.

As the comic demonstrates, Deadpool would have simply baited Odin by mumbling the phrase, “Lokisayswhat?” Odin would naturally reply “What?” and thereby expose himself as Loki.

The gag is hysterical in its simplicity and fits in perfectly with Deadpool’s silly sense of humor.

7. wakanda forever

Black Panther has been a smash hit for Marvel Studios in every sense of the word.

It is the third highest-grossing MCU movie to date (though it will likely drop to fourth after Infinity War finishes its theatrical run), is the highest-grossing non-Avengers Movie so far, and currently enjoys a 96% Rotten Tomatoes score.

This despite it being a solo movie at a time when Marvel is throwing all sorts of crossovers at its audience.

Spider-Man: Homecoming featured a supporting role for Tony Stark, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 was another ensemble movie, and Thor: Ragnarok featured the Hulk. Black Panther also had the added pressure of being the last film to hit theaters before the epic Infinity War, which featured nearly every character to date.

Fans loved the movie and the fictional country of Wakanda, and really gravitated toward the natives’ use of the phrase, “Wakanda Forever” while crossing their arms over their chest.

Wakanda fever quickly swept the globe. So much so that Chadwick Boseman was asked to utter the phrase at nearly every press event he attended.

Considering the gesture’s link to the Wakanda battle cry, it only makes sense that Domino would correct Deadpool when he used it to signify his team, X-Force.

6. deadpool versus black panther

Here’s a meme that successfully combines the humor of Deadpool, the characters of the MCU, the cat-like nature of Black Panther, and an internet craze that swept the globe back in 2015.

It was at this time that a series of videos began making the rounds online of cat owners sneakily placing cucumbers on the ground behind their pets (usually while the cats were eating or drinking).

In the videos, the cucumbers usually go unnoticed for some time as the cats finish up their meal.

When the cats finally do get around to noticing the vegetable lying on the ground, they tend to react in horror, immediately leaping into the air and dashing out of frame as quickly as possible.

Hence, the internet gifted us with this comic of Deadpool presumably placing a cucumber down behind an unsuspecting Black Panther, who then startles and leaps onto the shoulder of Iron Man who looks on unamused.

The combination of Deadpool crying from laughter, Iron Man looking on disappointingly, and Black Panther actually behaving like a terrified feline makes us long for the Merc with a Mouth someday making his way into the MCU and interacting with the characters therein.

Hopefully we’ll see it sooner rather than later.

5. deadpool versus infinity war

Back when Iron Man was first released in 2008, it was one of just four movies released by Marvel and DC that year (the other three being The Dark Knight, The Incredible Hulk, and Punisher: War Zone).

Since then, the superhero genre has exploded. 2016 and 2017, for example, saw a total of twelve DC and Marvel films released in theaters with the MCU accounting for five of them.

The oversaturation of superhero movies in theaters around the same time has forced moviegoers to carefully pick and choose which ones they will actually see at the cinema.

For instance, Black Panther was released in February earlier this year but was still in theaters when Infinity War was released in late April. (In fact, Black Panther received a slight bump in its box office sales the week that Infinity War hit theaters, suggesting fans of the MCU who hadn’t yet seen T’Challa’s solo film wanted to do so before they went to see the Avengers face off against Thanos.)

Often times, though, fans will forego the opportunity to see one superhero movie in theaters in favor of seeing the one that follows it.

As will likely be the case for Deadpool fans who don’t have the time to watch the 18 MCU movies that came before Infinity War. Or maybe they just prefer Deadpool 2’s R-rating.

4. second chance

To paraphrase another meme that has been making the online rounds for quite a few years now, “The number of actors who have played multiple superhero movie characters is too darn high.”

One look at this meme and you can see that it is absolutely true. To make matters worse (or better, depending on your point of view), this image doesn’t even include all of the actors and actresses who have played multiple superhero characters over the years.

The more famous examples are Ben Affleck getting a go as Daredevil and then Batman, Ryan Reynolds appearing in X-Men Origins: Wolverine as Deadpool, then playing Green Lantern before reviving Deadpool once more, and Chris Evans appearing as the Human Torch in the Fantastic Four franchise before playing Captain America in the MCU.

Some other examples not included in this meme are Halle Berry (who played Storm in X-Men and the titular character in Catwoman) and Michelle Pfeiffer (who played Catwoman in Batman Returns and will play Janet van Dyne in Antman and the Wasp).

Then there are those who swapped sides between films. These actors include Tom Hardy (Bane in The Dark Knight Rises and Eddie Brock in Venom), Michael B. Jordan (Johnny Storm in Fant4stic and Killmonger in Black Panther), and Michael Keaton (Bruce Wayne in Batman and Vulture in Spider-Man: Homecoming).

3. the one and only deadpool

While fans of Deadpool are certainly aware of the character’s close ties to DC’s Deathstroke, more casual fans may not know the link between the two.

For the uninitiated, Deathstroke (aka Slade Wilson) first debuted back in 1980. Deadpool (aka Wade Wilson) was created in 1991 and was clearly inspired by (if not a complete rip-off of) the DC villain.

That being said, the character has grown in the last 27 years to become one of the most unique characters in all of comics, as beautifully demonstrated in the meme above.

Some heroes inspire others to do good, as Batman did in Christopher Nolan’s Dark Knight trilogy. Then there are those who simply inspire hope overall, like Superman in Man of Steel whose symbol on his chest literally meant hope.

Then there are those put aside their differences in order to fight for the greater good and protect the world like Earth’s Mightiest Heroes in the MCU.

Lastly, there’s Deapool, whose character is perfectly captured by this image of him riding in a coin-operated rocket better suited for young children.

The Merc with a Mouth will sometimes accidentally save the day, but for the most part he is just here to entertain and to have some fun.

With so many heroes willing to save the world nowadays, it’s nice to have at least one who just wants to sit in a child’s rocket.

2. cable versus thanos

As mentioned above, there are plenty of actors in Hollywood who have played two different characters in comic book movies.

Chris Evans is the most famous example having been in Fantastic Four as Johnny Storn, the MCU as Steve Rogers, and The Losers as Jensen. Jeffrey Dean Morgan is another, having played the Comedian in Watchmen, Clay in The Losers, and Thomas Wayne in Batman v Superman.

Idris Elba is a third, having appeared as Roque in The Losers, Heimdall in the MCU, and Moreau in Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance.

Josh Brolin, however, has taken the madness to another level. He has appeared in five different comic book movies (including Jonah Hex, Men in Black 3, and Sin City: A Dame to Kill For) and will star in two more this summer.

He first appeared as Thanos in Infinity War and will pop up again as Cable in Deadpool 2, a fact that the Merc with a Mouth has already poked fun at in the film’s trailers.

With Brolin pulling double duty, it was only a matter of time before the internet used this knowledge to post a crossover meme like the one above, suggesting Brolin’s Cable was dared by Deadpool to steal the Infinity Gauntlet from Brolin’s Thanos. Sure, it’s confusing, but fun nonetheless.

1. thanos

Earlier this year, the list of greatest superhero villains to ever appear on film was a relatively short one.

Fans generally agree that Heath Ledger’s Joker in The Dark Knight and Tom Hiddleston’s Loki in the MCU are the cream of the villain crop and sit high above the rest.

Beyond that, however, there is very little consensus. That all changed when Infinity War hit theaters and gave us what is most certainly one of the best comic book movie villains ever in Thanos.

One could argue that Infinity War is Thanos’ movie with the Avengers themselves playing supporting characters. We learn the Mad Titan’s backstory, his motivation for assembling the Infinity Gauntlet, and see what he is willing to sacrifice to acquire all six Infinity Stones in one particularly heartbreaking scene.

He also happens to be an absolute butt-kicker, the likes of which the MCU hasn’t seen before. He absolutely manhandled the Hulk (that’s right, the Hulk) without the use of the gauntlet or the stones.

With the Infinity Gauntlet assembled, he is able to defeat the Avengers single-handedly on his way to blinking half of the universe out of existence with a snap of his fingers. It would take a truly insane individual to try and troll such a powerful super-villain.

Enter Deadpool.

This meme of him slipping a whoopee cushion underneath Thanos perfectly encapsulates everything that is great about the character and the dynamic he would have in the MCU.
