Harry Potter. It’s one of the most beloved franchises of all time. And yet not everything about this special story makes complete sense. How does wizard money work, anyway? What is the point of a Rememberall if it doesn’t tell you what you’ve forgotten? Why didn’t Fred and George Weasley see Peter Pettigrew on the Marauders Map? There are some that are sweet and cute together. But a lot of them make no sense.
Why could this be? Is romance just not J.K. Rowling’s forte? Could be. Or it could be that it’s hard to juggle all those characters and plot lines and write perfect romances for everyone. Something is bound to slip through the cracks. We are sure that most fans don’t mind it much. After all, there are many other factors to consider here. Romance isn’t everything. However, it is one thing that Rowling didn’t excel at when it comes to writing and the movies didn’t improve much on these couples either. And then there’s the other side of the coin. The couples that are so perfect that it’s hard to believe they come from Harry Potter at all. These couples make us wonder if maybe Rowling did have a talent for romance after all.

Just Perfect: Ron Weasley And Hermione Granger
Ron and Hermione are one of those couples that just work. They complement each other perfectly. While Ron can be a bit immature and is improved by Hermione’s maturity, Hermione can be a bit high-strung and is lightened by Ron’s humor. The two of them also have a whole will-they-won’t-they situation going on throughout the books and the movies, therefore when they finally get together it’s very satisfying for those reading or watching. It’s also a relationship that adds to both Ron’s and Hermione’s character development. By knowing Hermione, Ron becomes more mature and aware of the feelings and needs of others. By knowing Ron, Hermione is able to relax and have fun more and lean on Ron when she needs him. Therefore, both characters are made fully developed through their relationship with each other.
Make No Sense: Harry Potter And Ginny Weasley
Now hold on Harry and Ginny fans! Hear us out. Harry and Ginny work great as friends and fellow members of Dumbledore’s Army. However, Ginny’s childhood crush on Harry turning into an adult relationship doesn’t make much sense if you think about it. How many people actually end up marrying their childhood crushes? And how many times does one person having a crush result in the other person falling in love? It’s not very common, is what we’re saying. Sure, Harry and Ginny are special. Harry is the protagonist of the story and Ginny is a great character as well. Yet the two of them have little to no buildup before they get together. If Harry and Ginny’s relationship had been closer sooner, it would have made a lot more sense.
Make No Sense: Harry Potter And Cho Chang
Poor Harry. He’s plagued with his relationships making no sense. Now this relationship would have worked as a one-sided crush on Harry’s side. It worked fine like that. Yet once Cho returned his feelings that’s when things got complicated. Especially since she was still grieving her previous boyfriend, Cedric. Because of that, Harry felt like a rebound for many fans. And that isn’t a good spot to be in for anyone. Especially the protagonist of such a beloved series. From Harry’s side, the relationship felt like the kind of immature relationship one would have as a teenager. Given how mature Harry is for his age, it didn’t fully fit his character. And many fans might wonder, then, what the point of the relationship was.
Make No Sense: Ron Weasley And Lavender Brown
This relationship was almost creepy. Lavender randomly developed a crush on Ron and decided she wanted to be with him. The only problem is that Ron spent the books and movies in love with Hermione, only to date Lavender? It doesn’t make sense. Especially since Lavender and Hermione are nothing alike. It would make sense if Lavender and Hermione looked similar or had similar personalities, but since neither is true it just makes Ron look stupid. Which he can be true at times, don’t get us wrong. However, this relationship must be beyond even him, surely. Especially since it was doomed from the start, given Ron’s feelings for Hermione. Many fans might wonder why this relationship existed at all.
Make No Sense: Ginny Weasley And Dean Thomas
While Harry and Ginny’s relationship doesn’t make much sense, it does start with one of the halves of the relationship having a crush on the other person. Ginny and Dean is a lot more random and seems to come out of nowhere. This is a pattern, it seems, for relationships in the world of Harry Potter. A couple coming together with no buildup seems to happen a lot in these stories. But where’s the angst? The romantic tension? Not much of a thing in the Harry Potter universe. Unless you’re Ron and Hermione. They had a good buildup and loads of angst and romantic tension. Dean and Ginny, though? Completely out of nowhere. Leaving fans to question why the relationship happened in the first place.
Make No Sense: Hermione Granger And Viktor Krum
Though they make a pretty picture, Hermione and Viktor don’t make much sense. Hermione is a bookworm, while Viktor would be perfectly happy spending his life on the Quidditch pitch. There couldn’t be two more different people. And they don’t really complement each other well, either. Their relationship also gets really intense, at least on Viktor’s side, really fast. After only knowing each other for a little while, Viktor asks Hermione to come to visit him in Bulgaria. That’s moving a bit fast, isn’t it? Of course Viktor would want to see Hermione again. Who wouldn’t, in his situation? Yet they could have met in some central location or something. Something more informal than her going to visit him.
Make No Sense: Nymphadora Tonks And Remus Lupin
Hold your fire, Tonks and Lupin fans! Hear us out. Though their relationship is a cute one in some ways, it does come out of nowhere. Especially on Tonks’ side. She randomly falls in love with Remus and then loves him so much that her Patronus changes? That doesn’t seem realistic. Neither does Remus returning her feelings. After all, he had lasted this long being single. And due to being a werewolf, he probably felt a bit unlovable. Poor Remus. Then there’s their age difference. Perhaps age is just a number in the wizarding world but Remus is a great deal older than Tonks. This just adds up to the relationship not making much sense.
Make No Sense: Tom Riddle Senior And Merope Gaunt
What could be more nonsensical than the pair that produced Lord Voldemort? First of all, they weren’t in love with each other at all. It was completely one-sided on Merope’s side. Second of all, Tom Riddle was a Muggle. Shouldn’t Merope have looked down on him since she was a pureblood witch? Her family certainly didn’t think much of Muggles. So why was Merope different? What was so special about this Tom Riddle that Merope was able to overlook his Muggle heritage? He must have been really attractive and charismatic for Merope to fall so in love with him that she simply had to be with him. Which led to the love potion, which led to Voldemort.
Make No Sense: Neville Longbottom And Hannah Abbott
Now don’t get us wrong, Neville is awesome and definitely deserves love. But this is another case of no buildup happening in the actual series. If Neville and Hannah had been super close in the series of books and movies, fans would have seen this relationship coming. Instead, it seems like J.K. Rowling picked two random Hogwarts students out of a hat and paired them up. It would’ve made more sense if Neville and Hannah had both ended up with people that they were close to throughout the series. For example, Neville could have ended up with Luna Lovegood. Whether you like the idea of a romantic relationship between them or not, you have to admit they were close friends throughout the series. And friendship blossoming into romance isn’t unheard of in the world of Harry Potter. Look at Ron and Hermione.
Make No Sense: Luna Lovegood And Rolf Scamander
Sure, he’s a descendant of Newt Scamander, and Newt is pretty cool; He wrote the Fantastic Beasts and Where To Find Them book, after all. But poor Luna fared worse than Neville did. At least with Neville and Hannah Abbott, we know both characters. Hannah was a more minor character but we at least know who she is, what house she was in, and other things like that. With Rolf Scamander, we know nothing about him. And since Luna is such a fan favorite, many fans are likely wondering what the deal with this Rolf Scamander guy is. If Luna had ended up with someone we knew like Neville, it would’ve made a lot more sense.
Make No Sense: Draco Malfoy And Pansy Parkinson
Sorry, Draco and Pansy fans. Not only did they not end up together, according to JK Rowling herself, but Pansy was written as the opposite of Hermione. So she’s meant to be really snobby and stupid. Now so is Draco, for much of the story. But Draco develops. He evolves in the last two books and the last three movies. Draco isn’t able to eliminate Dumbledore. He saves Harry from Voldemort and the Death Eaters at Malfoy Manor. He ends up raising his son, when he has one, to be much more accepting of differences than he was. Pansy, on the other hand, remains the one-dimensional evil Slytherin girl she always was.
Make No Sense: Albus Dumbledore And Gellert Grindelwald
Dumbledore being in love with the biggest Dark wizard before Voldemort doesn’t really make sense. Yes, love can be blind, but you would think it wouldn’t be in Dumbledore’s case. Given how brilliant he is, and always was, you’d think he would have better taste than that. That he would be able to see right through Grindelwald, the way he could always see through Voldemort. Albus Dumbledore is not your average wizard, after all. He’s smart and talented and above all understands how important and powerful love can be. So why would he give his heart to someone so evil? It doesn’t add up. So fans are left to wonder what Dumbledore saw in Grindelwald and why he would fall in love with someone so morally ambiguous.
Make No Sense: Voldemort And Bellatrix Lestrange
Voldemort falling in love? Not likely. So why did Cursed Child make us think about this odd pairing. This couple worked perfectly fine as unrequited love on Bellatrix’s side. Voldemort returning her feelings is not even possible, we’re pretty sure. Can Voldemort even love anyone? We don’t think so. In fact, he definitely can’t. But they had a child which means their relationship must have been a close one at some point. Why? What would be the point? Neither Voldemort nor Bellatrix seem like the type to be doting parents. So why have a child at all? To continue the pure blood line? Possibly. But you’d think Voldemort would give that task to one of his Death Eaters, not participate himself.
Make No Sense: Lily Evans And Severus Snape
Their friendship and the romantic feelings on Severus’ side don’t make much sense. First of all, why would Lily, Muggleborn Lily, be friends with someone who had a clear sense of disdain for Muggles? Perhaps that didn’t develop fully until Hogwarts, but we would argue it was a part of Snape’s personality from the beginning. And why would Snape want to be friends with a Muggleborn witch in the first place if he didn’t like Muggles? It doesn’t add up. As far as the feelings on Severus’ side, it makes sense as a childhood crush. Yet childhood crushes don’t often turn into adult love. For Snape to remain in love with Lily throughout his life, he’d have to have been really in love with her as a child and a teenager. And that’s when people are still developing, so while people can fall in love then it’s not likely.
Make No Sense: George Weasley And Angelina Johnson
Though Angelina was friends with both Fred and George Weasley, she dated Fred while they were all at Hogwarts. She even went to the Yule Ball with him. So it is weird that she would end up married to Fred’s twin brother. It’s also weird from George’s side as well. Why would he marry someone his twin had dated? That just seems strange to us. Of course, strange things can happen when you’re missing someone. But marriage? That just seems out of character for George. If anything, he’d remain single while he was figuring his life out. Not jump straight into marriage with someone his twin brother dated. This pairing seems almost too neat. What are the odds that Angelina would fall for both of the Weasley twins? They are different people, after all.
Make No Sense: Rubeus Hagrid And Olympe Maxime
When asked if Hagrid got married or had children, J.K. Rowling said no. According to the author, Hagrid’s dating pool is very small. He would need to date another half-giant. And since he met one of the only half-giant women in the wizarding world and she didn’t return his feelings, poor Hagrid is left alone. This might make fans wonder why the relationship between Hagrid and Madame Maxime was written in the first place. If it was not to give Hagrid a permanent love interest, then why? Was it just to show that there are other half-giant people in the world of Harry Potter? While that is interesting, it would have been even more interesting to see Hagrid fall in love and have his feelings returned.
Make No Sense: Ginny Weasley And Michael Corner
Ginny is feisty and fun. Which is why many people who read the books were surprised when she started dating serious Ravenclaw, Michael Corner. Luckily for the fans, this strange relationship came to an end when Michael got upset that Gryffindor beat Ravenclaw in Quidditch. Ginny deserves better than that sore loser, anyway. It makes fans wonder, though, what the point of the relationship was. Especially when Ginny had a long term crush on Harry. Though that relationship doesn’t make much sense, either, at least it’s based on something. With Michael Corner, poor Ginny seems to have been caught in a bit of a plot hole. The plot needed her to date him and then dump him so she did.
Make No Sense: Lucius Malfoy And Narcissa Malfoy
Though they are married the whole time we know them, Lucius and Narcissa’s relationship also suffers from a lack of buildup. We don’t know how and why they got together. Therefore, they can, at times, seem like the grown up version of Draco and Pansy. Just two snobby Slytherins who are together for no other reason than their shared snobbishness. They also suffer from a lack of character development, especially on Narcissa’s side, since they are often presented almost as a unit. Narcissa’s character development in the last two books and last three movies is due to her love of her son, not her love of her husband. Therefore Narcissa’s relationship with Draco causes more character development than her relationship with Lucius.
Just Perfect: Lily Evans-Potter And James Potter
What could be more perfect than the pair that produced the Boy Who Lived, Harry Potter? Like Ron and Hermione, these two have brilliant buildup. They go from hate–on Lily’s side–and a crush–on James’ side–to being friends to falling in love. Through their relationship, James becomes a better person. And Lily finds someone she can truly rely on. She also finds a new family with the members of the Marauders and the Order of the Phoenix. They also complement each other well. James makes Lily laugh and Lily inspires James to be the best version of himself. All of that sounds good to us. And many fans likely agree. Lily and James are definitely a fan favorite couple in the world of Harry Potter.
Make No Sense: Bill Weasley and Fleur Delacour
This is another somewhat sudden relationship. The two of them dating is kind of random in the first place. It’s like J. K. Rowling picked two random people from the Harry Potter universe and put them together. That seems to be how a lot of these pairings got together. Fleur is such a minor character that most fans likely didn’t think would reappear in the books or movies after the Triwizard Tournament. Yet she did. You’d think with how beloved and important the Weasleys are, that Bill would at least end up with another Hogwarts student and that there would be significant buildup in the relationship. Instead, we get Bill and Fleur. And many fans likely wonder why.
