The philosophy behind Mewtwo’s creation was to make the world’s strongest Pokémon. Little did the scientists know how powerful their creation would be. Mewtwo far surpassed their expectations and was unwilling to be controlled by any corrupt official. He destroyed the laboratory that built him before traveling on his own and going into hiding. Several times, however, Mewtwo has come out to cause strife in the real world.

Since Mewtwo is a clone of Mew, there seemed to be only one Pokémon that could match him at the time of his original creation. However, Game Freak has vastly expanded its universe since then to include more powerful Pokémon, Ultra Beasts, and deities that can stand toe-to-toe with the lab-created powerhouse. Despite the power of Mewtwo, there are other Pokémon who are much more powerful.

Pokémon That Are Stronger Than Mewtwo

Arceus

As no surprise to anyone, Arceus made the stronger side of this list. Being the god of Pokémon (who also created the universe), Arceus has an incredibly impressive power level. Arceus exels in combat by taking advantage of type weaknesses, resistances, and immunities. With the capability to switch his type on the go, Arceus would be able to land the bug, dark, and ghost-type attacks that Mewtwo is weak against. Mewtwo might be able to get one or two hits in, but Arceus’ type changes would also mean that Mewtwo’s attacks would always hit at low or zero damage.

Mew

Mewtwo is a clone of Mew. While Mewtwo’s savagery and raw strength might give Mew a run for its money, this little legendary still manages to come out on top. During their battle in the first movie, Mew seemed to have fun the entire time they were fighting.

This suggests that if Mew were going full force it wouldn’t be much of a competition. Furthermore, Mew has the DNA of all Pokémon inside its body, allowing it to transform into any other living creature.

Rayquaza

The strongest legendary in Hoen is perhaps one of the strongest Pokémon in all continuity. Rayquaza was already a serious threat to the Pokémon world, capable of fighting off a Deoxys by itself and calming a war between Groudon and Kyogre. However, the introduction of a Mega Evolution has caused Rayquaza to become a force of nature capable of blasting through meteors with ease. There’s no limit to the power of Rayquaza now, and Mewtwo would easily lose a fight with it.

Ho-Oh

Ho-Oh is one of the most heavily worshiped Pokémon in the Johto Region, and its world-shattering potential makes it easy to see why. Not only does this gracious bird leave a beautiful trail wherever it flies, bringing luck to those who simply gaze upon it, but it can even revive those who were deceased. That’s all without mentioning its powers, as its Sacred Fire attack ensures that no one would be able to fight against it. Its power over mortality means that Mewtwo would be on the ropes before long.

Palkia

Palkia is a deity with command over space. He can warp reality and send people to other dimensions. His battle with Dialga was so intense that the two of them had to be sent to their own dimension so they wouldn’t harm the rest of the world in the process. Palkia’s powers as a dragon and its immense abilities mean that most wouldn’t be able to stand a chance against it. Darkrai tried to stop both Pokémon in one of the movies, but he was soon defeated by both. We’d imagine Mewtwo would find a similar fate.

Dialga

Palkia and Dialga would probably both be able to beat Mewtwo on their own. Palkia with its control over space, and Dialga with its control over time. That feat alone would allow Dialga to mess with Mewtwo and manipulate its surroundings. Furthermore, if Mewtwo managed to get a single hit on Dialga, all it would have to do is reverse time to get the better of Mewtwo’s strategy. That’s all without mentioning just how hard Dialga hits each time it lands an attack.

Tornadus, Thundurus, Landorus

Having control over the weather is more than enough to make a Pokémon extremely powerful. Mewtwo can manipulate the weather with his psychic abilities, but Tornadus, Thundurus, and Landorus have a true command over it. Couple that with their Dream Forms that make them each much more powerful, and these three have a real shot at defeating Mewtwo. In the games, they pose a serious threat, and we’d imagine a similar thing would happen in-universe. However, they’d probably all have to work together.

Calyrex

Calyrex was once the king of the Galar region, and it’s one of the few Pokémon capable of taking on Mewtwo in a fight. Calyrex’ base form may be better designed for peace than combat, but this ruler has a few tools that let it become a formidable opponent. First, Calyrex has the ability to see the past, present, and future. This means that Calyrex would see any of Mewtwo’s plans coming before he could strike. Additionally, this Pokémon can bond with the ice-type Glastrier or the ghost-type Spectrier.

While with the former, the pair is capable of dropping the surrounding temperature below -500 degrees Fahrenheit. Spectrier allows Clayrex to bombard its area with life-force stealing spirit flames. Either of these would be too much for Mewtwo.

Kyogre And Groudon

Kyogre and Groudon each have power over sea and land respectively. In their standard forms, it’s likely that Mewtwo would’ve been able to defeat them considering speed isn’t one of their strengths. However, with the addition of their Primal Forms, we’re singing a different tune. These Pokémon have become much stronger now, with the ability to make it permanently dry or rainy to boost their attacks. Their power just gets a massive increase at this point that Mewtwo likely wouldn’t be able to handle.

Necrozma

Necrozma is one of the strongest psychic-type Pokémon, and it has some interesting attacks that take advantage of light. It also managed to combine with both Solgaleo and Lunala to form some powerful Pokémon. That said, it’s unlikely that Necrozma has enough potential to go head-to-head with Mewtwo and come out victorious. Mewtwo would be able to deal with Necrozma’s unique attacks. The battle might last a while, but Mewtwo has defeated Pokémon that are much stronger than Necrozma. There’s no reason to think he would lose this fight.

 Kyurem Black And White

Kyurem would probably lose a fight against Mewtwo in its standard form. However, once it was able to merge with either Reshiram or Zekrom, Kyurem gained a much better fighting chance. Its abilities combined with another massive dragon legendary mean that its sheer power would probably be enough to overthrow Mewtwo. Furthermore, Kyurem was never formally defeated by Keldeo in the movie, just calmed down enough. This means that Kyurem has added durability that Mewtwo likely couldn’t handle.

Giratina

Giratina has the benefit of adaptability and type advantage over Mewtwo. Not only does it sport a dominant Ghost-typing, but it can also travel through the Distortion World at will and bring its opponents there for home-field advantage. All it would have to do is send Mewtwo to the Distortion World, and it likely wouldn’t stand a chance. Furthermore, Giratina’s elusive abilities and strong Ghost-type attacks would probably give it the edge it needed to defeat Mewtwo.

Eternatus

At first glance, Eternatus seems to be at a disadvantage against Mewtwo because of its typing. Dragon/Poison means that any psychic attacks are going to land particularly hard against this cosmic threat, but Eternatus has an ace up its sleeve the Mewtwo doesn’t have an answer for.

Mewtwo is likely to start the fight out strong against Eternatus, but, once it enters its Eternamax form, Mewtwo is unlikely to have any effective attacks or defenses for Eternatus’ massive 328-foot body. Zacian and Zamazenta were only able to stop this form with their special dyna/giganta/eternamax abilities, but Mewtwo lacks an equally specialized tool.

Galarian Moltres

A standard Moltres would be quick work for Mewtwo, but the incredibly powerful Galarian version would be able to hold its own. Its advantage starts with its typing. As a dark and flying Pokémon, Galarian Moltres would have the type advantage in both attacking and defending. Additionally, this legendary bird gives off a dark aura so strong that most Pokémon aren’t even capable of going near it. This effect would be extra strong against a psychic Pokémon like Mewtwo, so, if he had to get close, he would be incredibly uncomfortable before the fight even began.

Uxie

Why is Uxie on the stronger side? Sure, if it was a measure of its strength compared to Mewtwo’s, there would be no contest. Mewtwo would win. However, Uxie has an ace in the hole. Anyone who looks into its eyes has their memories removed. All that would need to happen is for Uxie to open its eyes and look at Mewtwo. At that point, the Pokémon would lose its memory and be able to be calmed down or open for a massive attack from Uxie.

Pokémon That Are Weaker Than Mewtwo

Deoxys

While a fight between Mewtwo and Deoxys would be fairly close, Mewtwo has been shown to be the victor in the manga. Despite Deoxys’ ability to swap between four different forms on a whim, Mewtwo outmatches Deoxys with its sheer psychic power. Mewtwo’s attributes are more than capable enough to keep up with Deoxys’ form changes, meaning that this alien just doesn’t have the stuff to defeat Mewtwo. Deoxys tricks would, however, ensure that this flight goes down to the absolute wire.

Solgaleo

Solgaleo has interesting typing as well as a powerful command over the sun. Despite essentially being a deity of the sun and possessing some psychic powers of its own, it wouldn’t be able to defeat Mewtwo in a fight. Perhaps the story would be different if Mewtwo only had its standard form, but Mewtwo has two Mega Evolutions that make it one of the strongest Pokémon in existence. As a result, its immense psychic powers would overwhelm Solgaleo’s, meaning that Mewtwo would inevitably become the victor.

Darkrai

Despite the fact that Darkrai would have a type advantage over Mewtwo, it wouldn’t beat Mewtwo in a battle. In the manga, there was someone who had been running away from Mewtwo for a time. However, we’re told that he had a Darkrai at his side, suggesting that the sleeping powers of a Darkrai wouldn’t be enough to take down Mewtwo. Furthermore, Mewtwo can learn Aura Sphere, which would deal a critical blow to Darkrai, having a weakness to fighting-type attacks.

Alakazam

Alakazam is one of the strongest non-legendary Pokémon. Its psychic abilities surpass many other Pokémon. It also has the IQ of a supercomputer, meaning that it can process and reason beyond what any human would ever be capable of. Despite all of its feats and a Mega Evolution, though, Mewtwo’s psychic abilities surpass Alakazam’s. Even in Mewtwo’s standard form, the fight might last a little while, but it’s clear who would come out on top. Those spoons won’t save him now.

Zamazenta and Zacian

Zamazenta and Zacian are legendary figures in the history of the Galar region, and most people didn’t even know about their existence until they reappeared to stop Eternatus. These dog-like protectors may become quite powerful in their Crowned Shield and Crowned Sword forms, but their skillsets are targeted at taking down giant Dynamax and Gigantamax Pokémon. While Zamazenta and Zacian have decent typing to take some attacks from Mewtwo, they don’t have a great way to deal with his long-range blasts or elusive maneuvering.

Articuno, Zapdos, Moltres

Articuno, Zapdos, and Moltres were the only other legendaries in the Kanto Region alongside Mewtwo and Mew. They were each quite powerful, controlling a specific element that made them each the best in their class. However, Pokémon Origins showed fans that even the power of these legendaries didn’t stand a chance against Mewtwo. It was able to shove aside Red’s Articuno without so much as a second thought. With its strength, we’d wager that Mewtwo would be able to defeat all three at the same time.

Regigigas

When it comes to underwhelming Pokémon, Regigigas certainly makes the top of that list. Despite somehow being the golem who presides over Regirock, Regice, and Registeel, Regigigas isn’t all that powerful itself. Sure, it was suggested to have towed the continents in place by dragging them, but its lack of speed means that it would just be a big target to Mewtwo. Mewtwo would be able to maneuver around it and make short work of it before it even had a chance to react.

Dragapult

Dragapult is a powerful dragon Pokémon that takes advantage of its high speed and offensive capabilities to overwhelm its opponents. This Pokémon’s secondary ghost typing does give it an advantage, and, if it can land a strong ghost-type attack, it’s likely to do some serious damage to Mewtwo.

Its downfall, however, is that it has very weak defenses. Mewtwo is able to tank a few hits even if they’re super effective, but a strong ghost or dark-type attack from Mewtwo will quickly end the fight for Dragapult.

Aura Lucario

Lucario is a heroic Pokémon known to be able to sense and channel aura in combat. However, it was the Lucario present in Lucario and the Mystery of Mew that managed to be one of the strongest Lucario in existence. It used aura to fight and communicate with others. It could even fight the Regi trio. However, this Aura Warrior Lucario wouldn’t able to fight against Mewtwo, even if it were to eventually unlock its Mega Evolution (which it didn’t even have in the film). Mewtwo’s strength would surpass Lucario’s with ease.

Entei, Raikou, And Suicune

Entei, Raikou, and Suicune are powerful Pokémon that have been helpful in a pinch, but none of them have the potential to face Mewtwo and live to tell the tale. They were regular Pokémon created by Ho-Oh, so their powers are limited as a result. They are stronger than most Pokémon, but impressive speed and elemental powers aren’t quite enough to bring down Mewtwo. All it would have to do is deflect those attacks and the match would be over quickly.

Zekrom And Reshiram

Where Dialga and Palkia were deities over time and space, Zekrom and Reshiram seemed like a step backward in the power department. Sure, they could generate fire and lightning unlike any other Pokémon in the world, but that’s where their strengths ended. With no special attributes outside of that, Mewtwo would easily be able to find an opening and exploit it. We’d wager he could also redirect their attacks or simply guard against them at the very least. It wouldn’t be much of a challenge for him.

Mesprit And Azelf

While Uxie didn’t make it to this side of the list, Mesprit and Azelf wouldn’t be all that potent against Mewtwo. Sure, they have their own special abilities that the people of the Sinnoh Region find useful, but they don’t have the strength or power that could cause them to hold their own in a battle against Mewtwo.

They’re the size of Mew but without any of its strength. Even if the two of them were working together, we’d wager that Mewtwo would make short work of them.

Heatran

Heatran is an extremely durable Pokémon who can take a lot of hits, but he has no special abilities outside of a solid typing and powerful Fire-type moves. While its Steel-type would be resistant to Mewtwo’s psychic attacks, all it would take is an Aura Sphere and Heatran would be down for the count. Heatran could retaliate with moves like Overheat, but Mewtwo would be more than prepared for those attacks just by moving the fire out of the way or conjuring a psychic barrier.

Celebi

Celebi does have the ability to travel through time, but it doesn’t have command over it like Dialga. Even if it traveled through time, Celebi would keep its wounds, and that wouldn’t allow it to win a fight against Mewtwo. Mewtwo’s abilities far exceed Celebi’s. If the two were forced to fight with no retreats, it wouldn’t be long before Mewtwo would come out on top. That’s also without counting the fact that Mewtwo can Mega Evolve, in which the battle would be over much faster.

Lugia

Mewtwo and Lugia are both psychic Pokémon, but Lugia has an edge in the fact that it can also control water. However, Mewtwo’s psychic powers seem to be greater and it also seems to be faster and stronger than Lugia overall. The fight would probably last a while, but not if Mewtwo Mega evolved. Once it accessed one of its Mega Evolutions, the fight would be over in a matter of minutes. Lugia doesn’t have any special command over life and demise like Ho-Oh, which means it would probably lose in the end.
