The war between Harry Potter and Twilight fans was carried out through most of the ‘00s. Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone premiered in 2001 and the first Twilight came out in 2008, but despite the substantial head-start Potterheads had, the rivalry between the two franchises became a staple in popular culture around the world. It wasn’t particularly helpful, either, that the two-part Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows finale came out in 2010 and 2011, while parts one and two of The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn premiered in 2011 and 2012 – giving even more leeway to critical and box office comparisons between these properties.
After five installments, the Twilight series of films grossed $3.34 billion around the world. In eight movies, the Harry Potter franchise grossed $7.72 billion worldwide. But both properties have left a mark in the entertainment industry and essentially started the movement of successful live-action adaptations of young adult novels, a trend that would later yield The Hunger Games, Maze Runner, Divergent, and so many more franchises.
Just because the Harry Potter vs. Twilight fan wars are taken seriously by some, doesn’t mean that we can’t have a little bit of fun with the whole thing, right?
These are 15 Harry Potter Vs Twilight Memes That Will Leave You Laughing.
15. HARRY POTTER VS TWILIGHT: CIVIL WAR
The Harry Potter vs. Twilight war is definitely a divisive subject in popular culture in which you are forced to pick a side, even if you like the two series. Like Captain America: Civil War, fans are pushed to take a side and stand with it, battling it out even if they are all technically on the same side of things.
Also like Captain America: Civil War, the Harry Potter vs. Twilight fan wars was left somewhat unresolved. Both franchises made a lot of money, pleased a lot of fans, and were never truly forgotten. It really just comes down to personal taste.
Ironically, the fan war that replaced Harry Potter vs. Twilight in the 2010s decade was the Marvel Cinematic Universe vs. DC Extended Universe rivalry.
14. STEPHENIE MEYER’S DREAM
Dumbledore thinks that it does no good to dwell on dreams, but isn’t that literally how Stephenie Meyer got the idea for the Twilight series of novels?
In a 2009 interview with Oprah that took place a year after the first Twilight film was released and became a blockbuster success, Stephenie Meyer said that she was intrigued by a dream she had and began writing it down without any intention of turning it into a novel. “It was just me spending time with this fantasy world, and when it was finished, it was, like… this is long enough to be a book,” Stephenie said.
Of course Harry Potter fans would create a meme to poke fun at the fact that maybe, just maybe, Stephenie Meyer should’ve kept her dreams to herself instead of dwelling on them.
13. VAMPIRE BASEBALL IS BETTER THAN QUIDDITCH
Quidditch is a very popular sport in the Wizarding World that was introduced in Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone and would go on to play a big part in the entire series. However, there are many people who simply detest Quidditch and think that it was an unnecessary addition to the franchise, and that includes some die-hard Harry Potter fans.
Twilight, on the other hand, never really invented its own sport - but a sort of Vampire Baseball game did happen in the first installment of the series. This particular meme pokes fun at Quidditch and concludes that even Twilight’s one scene with vampires playing baseball is still more entertaining than watching Harry trying to catch the Golden Snitch.
Katniss Everdeen, who survived The Hunger Games twice, would probably roll her eyes if she saw this meme.
12. HERMIONE WON’T READ TWILIGHT
Hermione Granger is known for being a voracious reader. She knows everything and everyone in the Wizarding World, having read famous authors such as Newt Scamander’s Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, and Bathilda Bagshot’s Hogwarts: A History, and even Gilderoy Lockhart’s autobiography Magical Me. But according to this particular meme created by Harry Potter fans, even Hermione would skip reading the Twilight books.
To be fair, Hermione did seem torn by the love triangle between her, Ron Weasley, and Viktor Krum in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, so maybe she would feel some sort of empathy toward Bella’s situation in the Twilight series. However, with so much to read for her classes at Hogwarts, it does seem unlikely that a young Hermione would waste time with romance novels about vampires.
11. WHEN TWILIGHT WINS ANY AWARD
The Twilight series of films was nominated for and won many awards throughout the years, such as People’s Choice Awards, MTV Movie Awards, Teen Choice Awards, and ALMA Awards. But because the franchise often competed with the Harry Potter movies for fan-voted awards such as the PCA, there was always a sort of bitter taste in the mouths of Potterheads whenever Twilight won anything.
Strangely, neither the Harry Potter or the Twilight movies ever won any award as big as an Oscar, which separates them from other blockbuster franchises such as Star Wars and The Lord of the Rings. Six of the eight Harry Potter films were nominated for a total of 12 Academy Awards nominations, but none of them brought home a trophy. The Twilight films were never nominated.
10. SORRY BELLA, SAVING CHO
One of the most interesting things about the Harry Potter vs. Twilight rivalry is that actor Robert Pattinson played a major role in both franchises, being the link that connects the two worlds to the distaste of many fans. In Twilight, Pattinson played the lead male character, Edward Cullen, who was only second to Kristen Stewart’s Bella Swan. In Harry Potter, the actor played a much smaller (but significant) character, Cedric Diggory, who had a big impact in the series’ fourth installment.
In The Twilight Saga: New Moon, Bella had to throw herself in the water for Edward to reappear and save her. In Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, Cedric set out to save Cho Chang, who was also drowning during a contest of the Triwizard Tournament.
9. KRISTEN STEWART’S DEEP SADNESS
Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 2 came out in 2011 and ended a ten-year-long series of beloved movies, prompting fans and the cast to evidently become emotional about it all. During the premiere of that movie, Emma Watson was spotted in tears as it dawned on her that this was the end of her Harry Potter journey.
The same could not be said about Kristen Stewart during the premiere of The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 2, which happened in 2012. This meme pokes fun at the “deep sadness” the actress was feeling about the end of the franchise. At the time, Kristen was enthralled by controversies coming from all sides of the media and was surely looking forward to putting an end to her Twilight days.
8. VOLDEMORT LIKES EDWARD
Fan wars or not, we really think that Voldemort would’ve enjoyed meeting Edward Cullen and maybe could’ve learned a few things from the vampire.
This meme shows a Voldemort who is ready to conjure “Avada Kedavra” (the killing curse) on Edward, but upon hearing that he sparkles, the Dark Lord seemingly changes his mind. Given that Edward Cullen was over 100 years old during Twilight, one can certainly assume that Voldemort would be curious about learning more about these immortality skills.
The irony, however, is that Cedric Diggory (Robert Pattinson’s character in Harry Potter) was killed at the hands of Voldemort and Peter Pettigrew through an “Avada Kedavra” curse, so maybe Edward Cullen (also played by Robert Pattinson) wouldn’t be so keen on meeting the Dark Lord after all.
7. HARRY REALLY HATES TWILIGHT
This meme borrows a picture from a Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire scene in which Harry is crying over the dead body of Cedric Diggory, played by Robert Pattinson, who would later play Edward Cullen in the Twilight films. In the meme, however, Harry doesn’t seem to be crying about Cedric’s death, but about how strongly he hates the Twilight series of movies.
Robert Pattinson joined the Harry Potter franchise in 2005, and only in 2008 would he become the protagonist vampire in Twilight. There was no way the actor or the fans could anticipate that the two franchises would develop such a strong rivalry against one another, and that Robert Pattinson would be the one real-life link between these two young adult fantasy worlds.
6. ANIMAGUS VS WEREWOLF
The concept of what an Animagus is in the Wizarding World of Harry Potter became popular during the Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban movie that was released in 2004. The Twilight vampires and werewolves only came into existence during the first novel’s publication in 2005, which was turned into a 2008 movie.
However, for some reason, there are Twilight fans out there who genuinely believe that the human-turned-animal transformations in Harry Potter were a rip-off from the Twilight saga. Not only are Animagi conceptually different from traditional werewolves in every way, but the rip-off argument is also completely unjustified by the timeline of releases from the Harry Potter and Twilight novels and films.
So no, an Animagus is not a just werewolf, and Harry Potter could not have copied a novel that only came out years later.
5. EDWARD WATCHES RON SLEEP
w
You know how Edward Cullen likes to sneak into Bella’s room and watch her sleep? Well, this meme imagines what would have happened if he did that to Ron Weasley.
It’s fair to say that Ron is not the most romantic or tactful guy, having taken years to make a move on Hermione and realize that she liked him back. Edward was already kissing Bella and taking her to dates in the very first Twilight novel, while Ron would consistently fail to seduce Hermione in nearly every single book, losing her even to Viktor Krum, who was a complete stranger, at one point.
Maybe Edward should have indeed gone to Ron’s room, and Ron could have taken some cues from the vampire on how to get girls to like him back.
4. EDWARD AND HARRY TALK
What if Edward Cullen is just actually Cedric Diggory living in the United States under a Wizarding protection program to save his life from Voldemort?
This meme explored the possibility of Edward and Cedric being the same person, but it also pokes fun at the turn Daniel Radcliffe’s career took after he played Harry Potter. In the meme, Harry mentions that he will move to New York City, which is related to the Equus play revival in 2007 that featured Daniel Radcliffe. The play premiered in the West End circuit in London and was then transferred to Broadway, in New York.
Equus gained mainstream attention because Daniel Radcliffe appeared naked in it, which caused a worldwide stir considering that he was just coming out of his role as Harry Potter.
3. A MEAN GIRLS REFERENCE
This Harry Potter vs. Twilight meme has everything to do with another beloved teenage property that dominates the Internet with jokes and memes year after year: Mean Girls.
In the meme, Bella is seen as the random girl with “a lot of feelings” who asks all the North Shore High School kids to try to get along in Mean Girls. It is later revealed that the girl “doesn’t even go” to North Shore High School, and was just there sharing feelings as a complete stranger.
Frankly, it is pretty hard to imagine that Dumbledore would be the one yelling out “She doesn’t even go here!” to the random girl, but that just makes this meme even funnier. Also, it’s pretty hilarious to imagine Bella Swan sharing her feelings in an unwelcome environment.
2. HERMIONE VS BELLA
Another major point of contention in the Harry Potter vs. Twilight fan wars is that Hermione Granger is a fully realized character who evolved significantly over the course of seven novels and eight movies, whereas Bella Swan remained relatively the same person throughout the entire Twilight saga of four books and five films.
Truthfully, however, it is not Bella’s (or Kristen Stewart’s) fault that the entire Twilight franchise was shot and released in a span of five years. In Hermione’s (and Emma Watson’s) case, fans literally watched her grow up throughout ten years.
Emma Watson was 11 years old when Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone came out and 21 years old when Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 2 was released. Kristen Stewart went from 18 to 23 during the Twilight films.
1. RON WAS DRIVING THE CAR
Remember when a car drove toward Bella Swan in Twilight and she was saved by Edward Cullen? Well, it wouldn’t be entirely shocking to learn that Ron Weasley was driving that car, would it?
Ron is infamously quite a bad driver, as evidenced in Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets as he is trying to bail out Harry from the Dursleys’ household. The car, a Ford Anglia owned by Ron’s father, is enchanted to take flight. Ron and Harry fly all the way to Hogwarts in it, but it wouldn’t be all that surprising if someone told you that they made a stop in Forks and almost accidentally ran over Bella.
Maybe it was Ron almost hitting Bella that started the whole Harry Potter vs. Twilight fan war, after all.
